The Ultimate Guide to Throwing a Wedding at Chateau de Chillon

As humans, we’ve been celebrating since the dawn of our species. From births and marriages to victorious battles and conquests, there’s always been something worth celebrating. At Chateau de Chillon, a castle on the banks of Lake Geneva that dates back to the 13th century, you can celebrate just as generations have before you in banquet halls with ancient architecture and detailing - but also with a few extra modern amenities. Here’s what makes a Chateau de Chillon wedding such a unique experience!

About The Chateau de Chillon Wedding Venue

Chateau de Chillon is a remarkable structure on a rocky island surrounded by the beautiful blue waters of Lake Geneva. First constructed in the 13th century, the castle’s location was strategically chosen to control passage from the north to the south of Europe. The word “Chillon” meant “rocky platform” in an ancient language, an accurate description of the rugged island upon which the castle sits. Chateau de Chillon has been home to a variety of prominent figures over the centuries, including emperors, popes, and princesses. It also inspired Lord George Byron’s famous Poem “The Prisoner of Chillon” in 1816.

In the centuries since it was first built, Chateau de Chillon has undergone its fair share of renovations, additions, upgrades, and restorations. Today, it still boasts its signature breathtaking location, situated in the midst of the stunning Lake Geneva. Ancient architectural features, gorgeous views, and centuries of stories all make Chateau de Chillon a totally unique option for a wedding venue.

Details of the Grounds

Chateau de Chillon offers two unique halls that are ideal for hosting wedding ceremonies and receptions. The first is the Aula Magna, a magnificent gathering space that was used by the Savoys as a banquet or feasting hall in the Middle Ages. It’s also where they dispensed justice and held their vassals (where citizens would swear allegiance and loyalty to their superiors.) During the Bernese period (in the 13th century), the space was used as a milling room, and centuries later, in 1839, it was renamed “The Hall of Justice.”

Aula Magna features tall black columns and lakeside windows that date all the way back to the 13th century. In addition, it contains a rich wooden ceiling and a chimney that dates back to the 15th century. The walls feature black and white marble stones arranged in a unique striped pattern, and a grand stone fireplace sits at the center of the room. It’s definitely a space that commands attention and inspires feasting and celebration for up to 200 people, perfect for a wedding that kind of feels like you’re back in the Middle Ages.

The second hall available for reservation at Chateau de Chillon is Castellan’s Dining Hall. It has been entertaining guests for over 700 years. Though today it gives off distinct medieval vibes, many details were enhanced in a renovation in the early 20th century. The oak columns, coffered ceiling, and chimney date back to the 15th century. This room was formerly a residence, and it features large 13th-century windows. Still admirable today, the stonework on the walls is arranged into a chevron pattern, a bold and eye-catching detail. The space can host about 100 guests for a seated dinner or up to 160 for a standing reception.

Photography Opportunities

Chateau de Chillon’s exterior features so many unique, ancient details that are wonderful backdrops in photos. Centuries-old stonework, archways, and decorative elements deliver an aesthetic of medieval history that buffs and enthusiasts will certainly appreciate. The views of Lake Geneva surrounding the castle are also extraordinary when featured in pictures. So we’ll make sure we get plenty with the waterfront scenery!
