Discover the best proposal spots in Switzerland
Are you about to ask the big question and looking for the best proposal spots in Switzerland? Look no further! I’ve created this small guide featuring some of my favorite locations where I’ve photographed proposals and engagements, to help you choose the perfect place to pop the question. Whether you dream of a dramatic mountain backdrop, a serene lakeside view, or a charming village setting, this guide will give you plenty of inspiration to make your moment unforgettable.
When should I propose?
There isn’t a right or wrong answer. Most people decide to propose during their holidays in Switzerland and honestly you can’t really go wrong here. However, depending on your intinerary there are some places that are in my opinion better than others in different season. I’ll talk about it in the blog. But to get this straight, if you want some beautiful white snow, come in the winter. If you are looking for some deep blue water colors, come in the summer in the Lavaux, Thun or Lucerne. Anyways, let’s start!
My favorite places for an unforgettable proposal
Grindelwald
Grindelwald is one of the most iconic destinations in Switzerland. It’s a small, charming village surrounded by majestic mountains, and you really can’t go wrong when choosing it for a proposal or elopement. I usually recommend my couples visit Grindelwald First, which is one of my favorite viewpoints anywhere. To get there, you take a cable car from the village, and in about 25 minutes you’ll reach the very top — the view is absolutely breathtaking.
Grindelwald First is stunning year-round. In the summer, you’ll likely cross paths with cows grazing peacefully on the lush green slopes, which adds an adorable, authentic touch to the scenery. In the winter, the mountain peaks are blanketed in snow, creating a truly magical, fairytale-like landscape. No matter the season, it’s a place where every photo you take will feel timeless and unforgettable.
Photographer’s tip: Start your session at the very top of Grindelwald First for breathtaking panoramic shots. On your way down, make a stop at the second-to-last station, there’s a lovely restaurant you can’t miss. From there, you’ll get a stunning view of the village below. It’s the perfect spot to take a few more portraits and capture the charm of Grindelwald from a different perspective!
Engelberg & Andermatt
I’ve grouped these locations together because they’re all in the same region and share a similar vibe. Each one is absolutely majestic for a proposal, with stunning mountain backdrops. I photographed a proposal in Engelberg during the winter, and it was such a sweet and memorable day. Of course, these spots are also incredible in the summer, when the light is soft and the landscapes lush.
If you’re in Engelberg, I recommend taking the Fürenalp cable car, the Titlis Express to Trübsee, or the Gerschnialp funicular and visiting the Ritz Gerschnialp. The walks between these locations are beautiful, offering plenty of opportunities for spontaneous and romantic shots.
Photographer’s tip: One location is lovely, but it can be worth booking an additional hour to capture a second spot. For example, start at Fürenalp and then move to Gerschnialp. Keep in mind that strong winds can sometimes cause the Fürenalp cable car to close, but don’t worry, the other facilities are usually open and just as picturesque.
Lauterbrunnen & Wengen
Lauterbrunnen is a world-famous valley that even inspired J.R.R. Tolkien when imagining the landscapes of The Lord of the Rings. The valley is home to 72 waterfalls and is an endless place of natural beauty. In the center lies the charming village with its iconic church. From there, you can reach the Schilthorn, where James Bond: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was filmed. You can also take a train up to Wengen, a quaint village overlooking the Lauterbrunnen Valley — absolutely stunning!
Photographer’s tip: Lauterbrunnen doesn’t really have a classic sunset; the sun quickly disappears behind the mountains. I recommend planning your proposal around the village of Wengen for a breathtaking valley backdrop, and then taking a few more portraits down in the valley itself.
Villa Honegg – Lake Lucerne
What about staying at an iconic villa and doing your proposal there? If that sounds like a plan, you definitely want to consider Villa Honegg. Ranked among the top boutique hotels in Europe, it’s also a perfect spot for a proposal. You could do it on the balcony, or even better, in the lush garden with its iconic lake view.
Photographer’s tip: There’s not much to add, except that I highly recommend taking full advantage of the hotel’s beautiful green pastures — they’re simply stunning. You could also book your photographer for an extra hour and head down to the lake for some additional portraits!
Gstaad – A helicopter ride on a glacier
Ready for something truly incredible? I recently went on a helicopter ride with a couple for their proposal, and it was such an unforgettable adventure. To keep it a secret, I approached them pretending to work with the helicopter company and just “taking some shots.” The views were absolutely breathtaking!
Photographer’s tip: Make sure to wear warm clothes — but also chic ones! You’ll want to stay comfortable in the cold while still looking great in your photos.
Lavaux – the great vineyards terraces
Let’s head to a different region now! Same country, different language — the French-speaking side of Switzerland. The scenery feels a little different here: still mountains and lakes, but also endless vineyards. It’s not called the Swiss Riviera for nothing!
Here, you’ll want to pay a bit more attention to the season. The vineyards are stunning and truly the place to be,but in winter, they look a little bare. They’re simply resting for the next season. Does that mean you can’t propose at that time? Absolutely not! It will just look a bit different from the lush green landscapes you often see online, which are usually captured in summer.
My tip would be to consider the Château de Chillon and perhaps combine it with a higher-altitude spot for a breathtaking lake-and-mountain backdrop.
Photographer’s tip: Everything is relatively close in this region, which makes it perfect for a two-location proposal. You could start at a higher viewpoint for the big “wow” moment, then head down to the lakeside for a second, more relaxed setting. The lake is truly beautiful. Just keep in mind that in summer, the beaches can be quite busy.
Zermatt – a view of the Matterhorn
One of the most famous mountains in Switzerland, if not the most famous, is the Matterhorn. Zermatt itself is already a charming mountain village, but the true reason it’s world-renowned is the Matterhorn. So you definitely want to have your proposal with it as a stunning backdrop.
Photographer’s tip: There are many different views of the Matterhorn. My advice is to either take the Gornergrat railway and propose at the top, or go to Riffelsee, which offers a beautiful lake with a stunning mountain view.

Switzerland for your unforgettable proposal
You really can’t go wrong in Switzerland. Every region is beautiful and has so much to offer.
As a proposal photographer, I don’t just document these beautiful moments — I also help you find the perfect spot to pop the question, depending on your itinerary. A good place to start is by asking yourself how you’d like this moment to feel.
Some couples choose a carefully planned setup with flowers and special details, often hiring a proposal planner (I know an amazing one!), while others prefer something more simple and intimate, with nature as their only backdrop. There’s truly no right or wrong choice — it all depends on what feels most authentic to you.
I would absolutely love to be part of this beautiful new chapter in your lives. Get in touch, share your itinerary with me, and tell me how you envision this special moment — I can’t wait to help you bring it to life.
